Hastinapur: The Land of Mahabharata
Last weekend was pretty phenomenal. After a really dry spell, we finally had a long awaited family trip. My last outing had been with my friends...remember? That too three months back! Well without any further ado let me start with what we did. We went on a roadtrip to Mawana, the land of sugar. And from there, we went on an excursion to Hastinapur, the land of Mahabharata.
Hastinapur is a small town in the district of Meerut. Those who are remotely acquainted with Mahabharata, know how significant the place Hastinapur is. Sadly today, there is no trace of the glorious past. However that does not mean its not a tourist place anymore. Right now this place is a pilgrim site for Jains with an enormous temple complex.
The religion of Jainism founded by Lord Mahavira can be divided into two major sects: Pitambar and Digambar. There must be around ten huge temples with really vast complexes. The temples over there belong to both the categories. Since it got quite late while reaching there (thanks to the sveltering heat) we could not pay a visit to the interiors of most of the temples.
We started from Mawana which is 16 kms from Hastinapur. Our first stop was Draupadi ka Kila meaning the fort of Draupadi. This site is the lone connection with Mahabharata. There is a temple inside the huge gate which offers stunning views of the surroundings. Since we were so short on time, we could not climb to the top.
Our second stop and the final stop was the Jambudweep Island which holds the entire temple complex. We literally hopped from one temple to another stopping to take pictures in between. Some of the temples where we stopped were the Shwetambar Jain Temple, Pandeshwar Temple, Karna Temple, etc. Our last stop was the Kailash Parvat Rachna where we waited till dusk and left wen it finally got dark!
A refreshing glass of lime soda and a temple excursion with loved ones is all what you need to turn a mundane Sunday into a fabulous one!
